The most delicious empanadas of the Bay Area! If you want to taste true Andean flavors, this is it! They are just as I remember them being back home in Latin America. So glad I found them!
Sabor Andino piqued my interest when it popped up on the online food ordering service I use regularly. My curiosity heightened when I could not find a Yelp review for this eatery while being able to locate a beautifully-designed website. Most local small businesses seem to make their first online appearances on Yelp; websites only show up at later times. Nevertheless, here was a new business with a website showing empanadas and other foods in their delicious glory. The flaky, crispy dough of the vegetarian emapanda that hugged the seasonal veggies was amazingly flavorful. I have tried several restaurants that serve empanadas in the area, such as Venga Empanadas - the shells are too soft and are not tasty - and Pica Pica Maize Kitchen - the shells are too oily and lack flavor, though their arepas are excellent - but Sabor Andino's emapanda shell was exceptional. There were at least half a dozen different vegetables, all of which blended well with the aji panca that gave the veggies a smoky, somewhat sweet, taste. The prices of the empanadas are somewhat steep at $4.50 a piece; however, considering that only organic ingredients are used and the empanadas are rather sizable, the price is mostly justifiable. Sabor Andino is primarily a catering company; unfortunately, I cannot comment on that portion of their business. However, if the exchange I had with the person I spoke with on the phone - Ana, perhaps - is any indication of their service, then I have faith that their catering will be superb. Oh, and about the photos on the website that show the delicious-looking empanadas? Well, the actual product looked just as good, and as stated, they did indeed taste delicious. [Important note: A storefront does not exist; Sabor Andino is a catering and delivery business only. Do not drop by or order online to pick up food - you'll just find an apartment building, in which the owners operate. I found this out the hard way. I do want to note that the person I spoke with on the phone was very nice and courteous, and she was able to process the order and meet me up.]
